TransAtlantic Ocean Literacy (TOL) - Day 2

Summaries from Day 1 and Drafting the Recommendations

Day 2 began with the facilitators of each session providing a summary of the key points from the presentations and ensuing discussions. Participants then formed two breakout groups to draft a fact sheet and recommendations. One group focused on tools for a researcher in preparing a grant proposal. The second group discussed the career benefits for researchers of education and outreach.

Participants were reminded that the recommendations should assist transatlantic marine research consortia supporting the Galway Statement on Atlantic Ocean Cooperation to capitalize on citizen science, promote a science-literate citizenry, and increase public awareness on Societal Challenges issues (e.g., ocean health, responsible ocean stewardship, food security, climate mitigation).

Outputs of TOL 2015

The three primary outputs of the workshop were:

  • To produce a white/peer-reviewed paper outlining the institutional and individual benefits of outreach;
  • To produce a fact sheet to assist grant proposal applicants integrate outreach at proposal scale; and
  • Greater integration of TOL 2015 and TOL implementation strategy in BG-14 AORAC and BG calls.
